What is waterproof flooring?

When you hear the word "waterproof," it can mean any flooring that's impervious to liquid, such as luxury vinyl (LVF) or tile. When you hear the whole term "waterproof flooring," it refers to a floor that offers the highest level of moisture protection. These floors are just as beautiful as they are stylish, with true-to-life images of wood, stone, or tile, combined with functionality such as durability, low maintenance, and fast, uncomplicated installation.

What does waterproof mean?

Sometimes that and water-resistant are used interchangeably, but that's not entirely correct. Waterproof means impervious to liquid, and it's made from 100% waterproof materials, such as vinyl, with no backings or coatings needed. It's impenetrable from bottom to top, meaning it can be submerged in liquid or spilled on, and it will be fine. Water-resistant means that, although water is repelled often, there's always a chance it will absorb, soak through, stain and ripple.

Waterproof vinyl flooring

This is a newer version of luxury vinyl, engineered to be even thicker and more durable. The original vinyl composites core is replaced with WPC (wood plastic composite) or SPC (stone plastic composite) cores that won't peel or ripple no matter how much water they're exposed to or for how long. While they both offer the same level of moisture protection, WPC has a warmer, softer, and more resilient feeling underfoot, while SPC is more firm and rigid like a hard surface. This flooring has the same high-end style with micro beveling and embossing, making it just as appropriate for the dining room as for the kitchen or bath.

Waterproof laminate flooring

Thicker materials, tighter seams, and cores such as the super-stable high-density fiberboard (HDF) make this product non-absorbable when it comes to spills, eliminating concerns about spills soaking, staining, and rippling. Laminate has been a popular alternative to wood floors but was once avoided for installation in kitchens and baths because of wetness and humidity. Now, thanks to this version, it can be installed anywhere! If you spill, wipe it dry, and it will be fine.
